Adventure, friendship and the desire for freedom: Mark Twain’s novel invites students to explore characters whose decisions reflect tensions between their own wishes and the expectations of others.

The teaching package from the “Literatur, die ankommt” series combines a reading edition in contemporary English with a structured teaching sequence. Shared key passages, manageable reading stages and graduated support guide students’ engagement with the novel.

The resources are designed for teachers working with different reading abilities in secondary English classrooms who want to support literary understanding. The English edition is intended for English as the main language of schooling.

A structured journey through the novel

The materials connect reading with discussion, activities that deepen understanding and reflection on learning.

Reading stages provide direction

Work on the novel is divided into manageable sections. Shared key passages give the class common points of reference.

Characters and conflicts are explored

Students examine Tom’s actions, support their interpretations with textual evidence and consider different perspectives.

Support takes different starting points into account

Graduated support and extension activities offer different ways into the shared reading.

The teaching plan connects the individual resources

The handbook, portfolio, reading checkpoints and final project work together. Preparation, teaching and assessment can therefore be planned as a coherent whole.

A look inside the materials

Tom has to whitewash Aunt Polly’s fence. When Ben makes fun of him, Tom changes how Ben sees the task. The selected extracts show how this scene becomes a starting point for literary understanding.

All materials shown are taken from trial edition 1.3, October 2026.

Development and classroom trials

The Tom Sawyer teaching package is designed for secondary English classrooms and is available as trial edition 1.3. Selected samples provide a first look at the reading edition, lesson planning and student activities.

If you are interested in a future classroom trial, you can contact me now. We will arrange the timing and access to the complete materials individually. You will receive a developed teaching sequence with coordinated resources. The trial will help establish how they work under the actual conditions of your classroom.

I would welcome your honest feedback: How accessible is the reading edition? How do students respond to the activities? How well do the resources work together? Where do students need additional support, and what should be adjusted?

The trial edition is not yet a publication that has completed its final review. Positive experiences, difficulties and suggestions for improvement are equally welcome. Your feedback will help me develop the package further.

Would you like to try the teaching package with your class, or do you have questions about the resources?

Please contact me. For a trial enquiry, it is helpful to include your school, your students’ year or grade level and your intended use. Enquiries about reviewing the materials from a subject or teaching perspective are also welcome.

We will agree individually on the materials provided, the timeframe and the conditions of use.
