A literary approach

How does a tailor become a count?

Wenzel arrives in Goldach without money. His carriage, cloak and silence are read as signs of high social standing. The narrator also reveals what the townspeople do not know. That gap creates humour, sympathy and questions about Wenzel’s own responsibility.

The complete first reading section contrasts Wenzel’s actual situation with the increasingly confident interpretations of the townspeople.
Scene images are illustrations created for the series, not historical photographs.

The English edition is a new translation of the project’s carefully adapted German text. It uses British English and is intended for education through English, rather than being presented as an English-as-a-foreign-language course.

Original author: Gottfried Keller. Adaptation, concept and editing: Edwin Zschaler.

Working with the text

Seven reading sections organise the complete novella. Six literary focal points connect close reading, discussion and tasks. The sequence grows out of the work itself.

Students distinguish three levels: what can be observed, what a character infers and what readers know. They then examine Wenzel’s behaviour and formulate a provisional judgement supported by passages from the text.

Text windows, empty organising columns and sentence openings offer support when needed. Extension questions keep uncertainties in view. The support does not supply the judgement.

The materials

Six components work together. Diagnostic checkpoints and the final project have separate student and teacher materials.

The combined sample connects the first reading section with KML-K01 and P01. The handbook excerpts show orientation, tasks and support; worked model answers remain in the complete package.
